Sensei Dave Dyas
Sensei Dave was born and raised here in Tonbridge, and began his serious training in Kyokushin karate here in 1982 at the Teen & Twenty Club in River Lawn Road, having trained sporadically in the 1970s as a young junior at the St. Dunstan's Hall Dojo of Tunbridge Wells Kyokushinkai. At that time, aged eleven, juniors trained alongside seniors and the traditional training was tough and still consisted of many, many, repetitions of techniques on most training nights, the main instructor at that time was Senpai Barry Henniker, and the club was later taken over by then Senpai Dave Allen.

Dave continued to train and in 1989 joined the thriving BKK Gravesend dojo which was run by Sensei Norman King and was then based at the long since demolished Springhead Recreation Centre. It was at this time he began to travel regularly to the Crawley dojo of Hanshi (then Shihan) Steve Arneil. Grading to brown belt in 1992 and fighting in the Gravesend team in the same year to take the bronze medal (the first of many) in the BKK National Clicker Tournament, Dave went on to try his hand at Knockdown in June '93. Any aspirations of a major career in knockdown were cut short after suffering a badly cracked sternum.

Dave remained at Gravesend throughout the 1990s, which was taken over by Sensei Ray Bond in 1998, and has become more and more involved in teaching as a matter of course. Sensei Dave is privileged to have been graded to all Dan grades by Hanshi Arneil personally, (Shodan-1999 Summer Camp, Nidan-2003 Summer Camp, Sandan-2006 Summer Camp).

Sensei Dave opened Tonbridge Kyokushin Karate Club in October 2006 and is currently the BKK England Clicker Coach for men and women.

Always keen to broaden his knowledge, Sensei has more recently also become a student of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu under respected UK instructor Dean Taylor, student of Rickson Gracie and Rickson's UK Representative.

Below is a brief pictorial history of our instructors' time in Kyokushin so far.
Senpai Toyah Dyas
Senpai Toyah began studying Kyokushin at Gravesend dojo in 1995 under Sensei Norman King. As a junior and cadet she showed natural competitive promise and won many trophies. The first big test came in 2000 when Senpai Toyah was selected to represent Great Britain at the first Pilatus Cup in Switzerland, fighting cadet knockdown, and she battled her way to the final and won. Toyah continued competing in novice knockdown events and began carving herself a fearsome reputation, usually placing as winner or runner-up.

In 2002 Senpai achieved Shodan (1st dan black belt), which was awarded by Hanshi Arneil at national grading at Crawley dojo. Senpai Toyah continued to dominate the womens' knockdown scene, fighting in Belgium and France (achieving a third place at the French Shinkyokushin IKO2 national 2005), and placing second at the prestigious British National Knockdown in 2004, losing to the formidable Kurbanova from Russia in the final. Senpai also graded to Nidan (2nd dan black belt) at summer camp in 2004, awarded by Hanshi Arneil.

The pinnacle of Senpai Toyah's career (so far) came in 2005 when she was selected to represent Great Britain in the 3rd IFK World Knockdown Championships, which was held at Crystal Palace in London. Toyah fought her way to the final and secured second place to a very worthy winner, Yulia Devyathuka from IFK Russia.

Senpai Toyah is also currently the reigning BKK British Clicker champion 2006, and is qualified as a National Clicker Judge and is also a National Judge in Kata.
Senpai Toyah is the club's nominated Child Protection Officer.

Senpai Janet Dyas
Senpai Janet has been helping with the juniors since Senpai Toyah has been taking a well-earned break to look after her and Sensei's recent addition to the family. Janet started training in Kyokushin Karate in 1985 at the then Tonbridge club run by Senpai Dave Allen. At the time starting such a vigourous martial art an age the wrong side of 35 was considered unusual. Along with husband Senpai Mick (who had trained in the 1970s and came back as a 5th kyu) Janet got the 'Kyokushin bug' and on top of holding down a full-time job in the civil service was training virtually every night of the week. Janet and Mick achieved Shodan at grading with Hanshi Arneil in 1992 and have continued to train regularly since. Janet also has plenty of experience teaching children karate as she regularly taught at the old Tonbridge club during the '80s and '90s. Age being no barrier to training, Senpais Janet and Mick have attended BKK Summer Camps 2008 and 2009 (four days intensive training) despite both being over retirement age.
